sharing a love for Cat Power

Posted in Uncategorized on January 30th, 2008

Danielle and I had a grand time with the podcasts yesterday in class…..especially after we realized the red light on the audio recording should be lit up red to actually record.  Haha…sadly we did a whole interview before we realized that it was not on.

…But by doing this project, we realized that we share a love for the musical artist, Cat Power.  This was the best part of our interview for me, because I find it rare to find somebody with a love for Cat Power and her music.  I recommend anyone reading this to check her music out…..and try to go to one of her concerts!  She is just fabolous.

Here are a couple of pictures I have from the concert I attended this past October (2007):

time changes everything…even rock and roll

As mentioned in class, a couple of us did not realize that “rock and roll” had some type of sexual context.  I sure did not think of it in that manner and I’ll be honest, I never really thought about the phrase’s context in any manner.  Miller’s Flowers in the Dustbin has broadened the context and meaning of “rock and roll.”  Henry Glover, the artists and repertoire man for King Records, is quoted in this book: “They had a definition in those days of the word ‘rock,’ meaning the sex act, rather than having it known as ‘a good time,’ as they did later.”  Miller further notes that the rock was not played on most radio shows in its early phases because of how the populace interpreted the genre.  Today, it now seems that most radio stations lean to the music associated with sexual context.  I find it unbelievable how much change can happen in the intepretation of music over time.
